Beatrice Spampinato, PhD

Beatrice Spampinato is a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Venice and the Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florenz. She recently received her PhD from the Ca’ Foscari University of Venice and the Aix-Marseille Université. Her dissertation, Medieval Armenian and Italian Architecture: A Comparative Approach. Historiographical Analysis and a New Methodological Proposal deals with Italian art historiography relating to Armenian medieval heritage and comparative approaches applied to Romanesque and Bagratid architecture.

She worked as an intern at the Byzantine Museum in Nicosia (2015), and since 2018, she has been collaborating with the Centre for the Study and Documentation of Armenian Culture in Venice. In the framework of her doctoral research, she made mobility terms for research at the Aix Marseille Université (2019), at the Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (2021), and she has been the recipient of a fellow from the Kunsthistorische Institut in Florenz. She is a member of the editorial board of the Eurasiatica Series, Edizioni Ca’ Foscari, and since 2019 she organizes the annual Seminar on Armenian and Eastern Christian Art at the University of Venice.

Beatrice is currently working on the project Observing South Caucasus’ Historical Landscape: An Open Photo Archive. The OSCOP project aims to digitize and catalog a collection of photographs from the Soviet period on the cultural heritage of the South Caucasus, held by the Centre for the Study and Documentation of Armenian Culture in Venice and to study the relationship between monumental and natural landscapes in Armenian and Georgian tradition through photo images.
