Conferenza serale
Knut Ebeling: "Toute la mémoire du monde". From the City as Archive to the Archive of the City
on the occasion of the Summer School "The City as Archive. Histories of Collecting and Archiving in and the Musealisation of Florence, Eighteenth Century to the Present"
What is a city and what is its relation to cultural memory, e.g. to collections, museums and archives? How can cities be defined as "text" (Michel Butor) or as "archives" (Vyjayanthi Rao)? And what differentiates the media of cultural memory – archives, collections and museums – in the end? The lecture tries to define key notions of cultural memory and its temporality and put it in relation to urban thinking. It tries to find an answer to the awkward phenomenon that everything that seems so old – like the inventory of a capital of cultural memory as Florence – in the end turn out to be pretty young constellations.
