Power Dynamics, Territories, and the Arts: Mediterranean and Trans-Oceanic Trajectories

In recent years, transcultural and global dynamics have been among the core interests of the discipline of art history. This round table seeks to bring the field into a multi-disciplinary dialogue and to provide a platform for discussions of case studies as well as various methodological approaches. The focus will be on spaces of artistic interactions from the middle ages to the early modern period in the Mediterranean, across the Atlantic and Pacific, as well as in the Indian Ocean World. We will interrogate the impact of maritime entanglements and explorations; how goods, people, and artworks were commodified and circulated; how new conceptions of space, territories, and empires were materialized or subverted through the creation of landscapes, architecture, and urban planning; and how artifacts and the visual arts played a key role in negotiating colonial impositions, processes of resistance, fields of tension, and cross-cultural encounters in an age of pre-modern globalization.
