Digital Materialities. Digital Practices and the Photographic Archive

In the last ten years, with initiatives such as the international conference series "Photo Archives" and the collaborative project "Photo Objects", the Photothek of the Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florenz has promoted research and reflections on the materiality of documentary photographs and on photo archives as ecosystems, participating in the debate also with the "Florence Declaration – Recommendations for the Preservation of Analogue Photo Archives". In the current institutional situation still characterized by the rhetoric of the so-called digital revolution and dematerialization, however, it is more and more necessary to approach also the question of the materiality of digital photographic and archival practices, highlighting the continuities between different photographic and archival technologies over time. This lecture series wishes to offer a contribution to this emerging discussion.
