Michelangelo su carta

To make visible the invisible. This virtual exhibition, curated by Mauro Mussolin and developed by the KHI DH Lab, focuses on some of the most difficult to observe drawings made by Michelangelo. The artist was frugal in using paper and obsessive in keeping it, preserving his studies and sketches for decades, re-using them almost immediately (by drawing or writing over them), or even burning them at two crucial moments in his life.

This project leverages cutting-edge technologies to document how Michelangelo used paper, but also to better understand the life-cycle of paper in Renaissance workshops. As every manipulation of the paper sheet is registered by the material itself, patient analysis of both the artistic and material aspects of Michelangelo's sketches can reveal useful information about their history. High-quality images made with a range of photographic techniques (diffused light, backlight, digital manipulation) will help users to view and study these drawings with unprecedented clarity.

The exhibition is expected to be released to the public in October 2022.
