Hans Belting: Painted Poetry in Venetian Renaissance Painting

The lecture does not deal with pictures that treat poetry as iconography, but discusses paintings that behave like poetry and rival with the pastoral fashion in literature. For a short time in the early Cinquecento , painting reveals a new quest for "Art" , as against established functions of images such as portraits and religion. The "art work" becomes an issue with many uncertainties. Giorgione will be a key figure in the lecture, but Titian’s Concert Champetre will find special attention. Finally, the old Bellini enters the stage with a subtle objection against the new game.The experimental character of many famous works mirrors controversies over the great project to renew art.

Hans Belting ist Professor Em. für Kunstgeschichte und Medientheorie an der Hochschule für Gestaltung Karlsruhe [HfG].

Geboren 1935 in Andernach [D]. Studium der Kunstgeschichte, Archäologie und Geschichte in Mainz und Rom. 1959 Promotion in Kunstgeschichte. Als Visiting Fellow der Harvard University am Dumbarton Oaks Institute, Washington, D.C., Studien bei Ernst Kitzinger.

1966 Assistenzprofessur für Kunstgeschichte und Lehrtätigkeit im Bereich der Kunstgeschichte des Mittelalters an der Universität Hamburg. Von 1970-80 Professor für Kunstgeschichte an der Universität Heidelberg.

1980 Professur für Kunstgeschichte an der Universität München [Lehrstuhl H. Wölfflin und H. Sedlmayr]. 1984 Gastprofessur an der Harvard University sowie 1989 und 1990 Meyer Shapiro-Gastprofessur an der Columbia University, New York.

Seit 1992 Professur für Kunstgeschichte und Medientheorie an der neu gegründeten Hochschule für Gestaltung [HfG] Karlsruhe. Leiter des 2000 gegründeten interdisziplinären Graduiertenkollegs »Bild-Körper-Medium. Eine anthrophologische Perspektive« an der HfG Karlsruhe, mit Kollegiaten u.a. aus den Bereichen Kunstgeschichte, Literaturwissenschaft, Philosophie, Neurowissenschaften und Psychologie.

U.a. Mitglied der Medieval Academy of America, der American Academy for Arts and Sciences, des Wissenschaftskollegs in Berlin sowie des Ordens »Pour le mérite für Wissenschaften und Künste«. 2002-2003 Europäischer Lehrstuhl des Collège de France, Paris. 2002 Getty Visiting Professor, Buenos Aires. Honorarprofessur an der Universität Heidelberg. Mitglied verschiedener Europäischer Akademien.
