Christine Göttler: The Chamber of Sleep: On a Drawing by Karel van Mander

The focus of my lecture is Karel van Mander's pen-and-ink-drawing representing Night, which served as the model for the final engraving in Jacob Matham's series of the four times of the day, published in 1601. Van Mander's composition differs from the established iconography of Night in that it presents Morpheus rather than Somnus as the dominant allegorical figure and, moreover, shows two of Somnus's sons in the act of painting with brush and palette. It has so far gone largely unnoticed that Morpheus - as a master craftsman, maker and simulator of human forms - also plays a crucial role in Van Mander's theoretical reflections on painting. The lecture discusses Van Mander's composition within the framework of contemporaneous art and (art) literature on dreams and on (Netherlandish) artists' power of imagination. It further link Morpheus to other figures of (self-)transformation such as Proteus and Vertumnus, which play a central role in Van Mander's views on artistic imitation. It will be argued that Van Mander's Morpheus, with his cornucopia of smoke and fleeting shapes, "embodies" the copiousness and also the unruly variety of artistic invention from the imagination ("uyt den gheest"); he might thus function as a counter-figure to Nature and her ever-changing shapes.

Prof. Dr. Christine Göttler ist seit dem 1. April 2009 Ordinaria für Kunstgeschichte der Neuzeit an der Universität Bern. Sie ist in Luzern aufgewachsen und hat nach einer Ausbildung an der Hochschule für Gestaltung und Kunst in Luzern an der Universität Zürich Kunstgeschichte, Deutsche Literatur und Religionswissenschaft studiert. Gleichzeitig war sie als wissenschaftliche Assistentin an der Stiftung Oskar Reinhart in Winterthur tätig. 1985 schloss sie mit dem Lizentiat ab. Sie arbeitete danach als wissenschaftliche Assistentin an der Universität Zürich (1987-89) und der Freien Universität Berlin (1989-94) und promovierte 1991 in Zürich. Danach folgte ein dreijähriger Forschungsaufenthalt am Warburg Institute der University London, School of Advanced Study. 1997-98 war sie Visiting Professor an der Arizona State University, von Oktober 1998 bis März 2009 war sie Professorin für Kunstgeschichte und zuletzt auch Institutsleiterin an der University of Washington, Seattle. 2006 hat sie sich an der Freien Universität Berlin im Fach Kunstgeschichte habilitiert. Weiter nahm sie Lehraufträge und Vertretungen an der Universität Zürich war und erhielt Einladungen zu längeren Forschungsaufenthalten vom Internationalen Forschungszentrum Kulturwissenschaften (IFK) Wien; Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study (NIAS), Wassenaar; und von der Huntington Library, San Marino, CA). Ihre Forschungsprojekte wurden unter anderem vom Schweizerischen Nationalfonds, der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft, dem Getty Grant Program, dem Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (Rom), der British Academy (London), dem Deutschen Akademischen Austauschdienst (Bonn / New York) und dem Marie Curie Programm der Europäischen Union gefördert.
