For more than 125 years the Photothek has been collecting images primarily documenting Italian art from late Antiquity to the modern era.

The collection, which comprises over 630,000 photographs, has evolved in line with the Institute's academic and research profile. The preservation and expansion of this collection, and the investigation of its historical structures and holdings, are among the Photothek's main tasks. The Photothek has established itself as an international centre of research on archives and photography, focused upon the photograph as a material object.

The Photothek has recently moved from Palazzo Grifoni Budini Gattai to a new building in Via Gustavo Modena 13. From 21 May 2024, the holdings will be accessible again. Further information can be found here.
