Die Studie analysiert die kirchenpolitische Instrumentalisierung des Kardinalerzbischofs Carlo Borromeo (1538–1584) und seinen Aufbau zum Heiligen anhand seiner bildlichen Darstellungen. Insbesondere die frühe Bildproduktion vor der Kanonisation im Jahr 1610 wird auf ihren fakten-, sozial- und mentalitätsgeschichtlichen Hintergrund hin untersucht.
