Born on February 9, 1940 in Basel. Studied art history at the universities of Basel and Florence, doctoral thesis in Basel (1967), postdoctoral thesis in Zürich (1973), university lecturer in Zürich (1973–1979), professor in Göttingen (1979–1982), professor ordinarius and director of the Institute of Art History at the University of Heidelberg (1982–1993), director of the Kunsthistorisches Institute in Florence (1993–2002), director of the Kunsthistorisches Institute in Florence – Max Planck Institute (2002–2005), academic member of the Max Planck Society (since 2002) and director emeritus of the Kunsthistorisches Institute in Florence (since 2005).
