Leon Battista Alberti: Über die Seelenruhe

Edited with introduction and commentary by Hana Gründler, with Katharine Stahlbuhk and Giulia Baldelli

Translated by Victoria Lorini

Since antiquity, philosophical thought has revolved around the question of the good life: The undertaking of a successful existence as an individual and as an active member of society, the search for practical ways of avoiding suffering, and the attainment of equilibrium of the soul in a crisis-ridden world are topics that are still of relevance even today.

In his dialogue, Leon Battista Alberti explores the full range of human emotions and reflects on the well-tempered self which can only be achieved through constant nurturing and practice. Allusive and elegant, Alberti shows the fundamental role of sensual perception, the aesthetic-artistic experience of the life-world and the common search for knowledge on the path to becoming an ethical and political being.
