Die Büste der Nofretete und die Kunst der Abweichung

Horst Bredekamp

One of the most famous dictums of Aby Warburg was a cultural-geographical metaphor: "Athen will eben immer neu aus Alexandrien zurückerobert werden." While he left the cultural dynamics encapsulated in this phrase untouched, Gerhard Wolf flipped these geographical poles, in order to get a new and more adequate picture of the cultural dynamics of the Mediterranean world up to modern day. This lecture follows this new framework with regard to the famous bust of Nefertiti, object of a current exhibition on the Amarna-culture in Berlin, and its journey through the twentieth century. The focus will be placed on a detail that can only be mentioned in the lecture, in order not to ruin the argument in advance.
