This event is the first of a three-part series presented by the Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florenz – Max-Planck-Institut and the Edinburgh Centre for Global History in partnership with the Getty Research Institute and the Ayala Museum.

The first conversation in the transpacific and transatlantic book launch series explores new lines of enquiry, as presented in the new publication Transpacific Engagements: Trade, Translation, and Visual Culture of Entangled Empires (1565–1898). Speakers will discuss how a focus on transpacific exchanges and visual and material culture enhances our understanding of global connections and economic exchanges from the sixteenth to the nineteenth centuries.

Transpacific Engagements: Trade, Translation, and Visual Culture of Entangled Empires (1565–1898) is a joint publication by Getty Research Institute, the Ayala Museum, and the Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florenz – Max-Planck-Institut. Penned by authors from all over the globe, the essays in the book address cultural and artistic exchanges in the Asia-Pacific region with an emphasis on the Spanish and American enterprises. Many of the essays center on the Philippine experience, but the impact of these linkages on other parts of the world, notably South and Southeast Asia and Europe, are examined as well.
