Granular discourse transformation

Original magazine "Sociedad y Política", Lima 1973. Intervened with quotations and portrait of Amílcar Cabral, 2024

In my research I collect visual and sound material, as well as texts that arise from ideological discourses of "otherness." I am especially interested in "otherness" as the establishment of sociocultural values in a hierarchical way, including the construction of an "otherness" of race and sex. I am also interested in its relationship with practices of territorial occupation and cultural and economic dominance.

I work with discourses from specific historical contexts, this includes documents from the 16th century to those from contemporary situations. My method consists of focusing on two or three discursive contexts and collecting cultural material that represents them. I make the selection based on a subjective reading of documents, such as historical travel literature and drawings (E.g., Ulisse Aldrovandi), ethnographic photography, newspapers, lifestyle magazines, popular songs and films.

The contexts that I place in relation are chosen independently of their historical time and rather based on recognizing subtle associations on a visual, aesthetic or verbal level. My search and selection method does not follow one-way timelines, but perceives cultural time as a complex subjective experience with different lines of flight.

I define this process as SUBJECTIVE RESEARCH. Unlike an objective investigation that analyzes specific information, this method is an intervention of concrete facts. My intention is to reinsert them as cultural tools in contemporary ways of thinking, feeling and political action. The tools are a kind of agents of disruption. The contradictions, the absurdity and the irreverence generated are for me a method of creating knowledge, developing it from subjectivity and affection.

I am currently directing this research towards the realization of performative lectures, which are an arrangement of processed text readings combined with speak-singing interpretations and sound tracks.
