COLORS - Between Two Worlds / Colore tra due mondi. The Codice Fiorentino of Bernardino de Sahagún

International Conference

The Villa I Tatti, the Harvard University Center for Italian Renaissance Studies (Florence) and the Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florenz - Max-Planck-Institut (Florence) are jointly sponsoring an international conference on the Codice Fiorentino of Bernardino de Sahagún entitled 'COLORS - Between Two Worlds'.

The conference organizers are Gerhard Wolf, Clara Bargellini, Diana Magaloni, Alessandra Russo, Joseph Connors and Louis Waldman

The bilingual, illustrated codex of Bernardino de Sahagún and his Nahua collaborators produced in Mexico City in the sixteenth century and now in the Laurentian Library, is the starting point of this meeting. Very well known among specialists as a historical and anthropological source, the codex has never been studied as an object with unique physical characteristics. This meeting will present the results of analysis of the pigments used in the codex, and will explore the problems and implications of these findings. Several papers will explore the language of the codex, its status as a book, and its authors. Looking beyond the codex alone, several participants will focus on the trade in pigments between Europe and America and their use in both areas, while others will consider the codex and its colors and materials within broader comparative and cultural concerns. By bringing together scholars who have dealt with pigments as well as with the expressive implications of colors and materials in different geographical areas on both sides of the Atlantic, this symposium will relocate the Sahagún Codex within the history of art and culture. It will also continue the exchanges and discussions that began in the era of its creation.
