KIT Students Excursion to Florence
The Lise Meitner Group "Coded Objects" organized an excursion to Florence for the architecture students of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) in cooperation with the Professorship of Architectural Theory led by Anna-Maria Meister.
Let's mash up Florence! In a historical overlay, the KIT students re-enacted and annotated several historical excursions to Italy during their seminar week. Using original slides, timelines, travel guides and built examples, they compared the aging processes, urban and demographic changes and appropriations on site. Shifts in the medial mediation of architecture (slides vs. Instagram, lecture vs. TikTok) were illustrated as well as the question of renaissance and postmodernism, antiquity and archives and their overlaps. The KIT students participated in several guided tours of Florence, exploring the historical center with different emphases and wording of the individual guides, including a guided tour of "Colonial Florence" offered by the AMIR Project. In addition, they held a workshop at the Photothek at the KHI and an introduction to Florentine travel guides since 1591 with the director of the library, Jan Simane, examining archival processes as a critical practice.
