Frida Sandström, Ph.D.

Visiting Scholar

Frida Sandström is a writer and critic based in Copenhagen. She has recently completed her PhD thesis on feminist critiques of art and sexuality; Dropout Subjects. Jill Johnston’s and Carla Lonzi’s Disintegration and Deculturalization of Art Criticism as Social Critique in 1969 (August 2025). Sandström has been published by De Gruyter, Nordic Journal of Aesthetics, Kultur & Klasse, Brill, Afterall, and Philosophy of Photography. Her art criticism and essays are frequently published in journals such as Artforum, Frieze, Art Agenda, e-flux, Camera Austria, Art-Papers, Critic d’Art. Sandström is a contributing editor of the Swedish art journal Paletten since 2015 and her curatorial, critical and artistic projects often evolve in collaboration. Sandström was a research fellow at CRMEP (Center for Research in Modern Philosophy), Kingston University, London in 2021, and a Paris-Rome Fellow at Bibliotheca Hertziana – Max Planck Institute for Art History and at DFK Paris – German Centre for Art History in 2023-2024. Sandström frequently teaches and lectures in art history, critique, and critical theory at Scandinavian universities and art academies.
