The KHIA general index – available soon, initially in Italian, on the KHI DH Lab website – has been created to measure and provide a general overview of the entire historical archive of the Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florenz, and also to address the needs and opportunities for critical discussion arising from the temporary relocation to Palazzo Grifoni and the restoration project for the KHIA’s future premises in Casa Zuccari.

The level of description is that of the storage units, which, in archival studies, roughly corresponds to the reference tool known as the “summary list”.

The three “official” languages of the KHIA highlight an interesting preliminary issue. This type of tool has a historical and cultural character and a contextual connotation: “Findbuch” and “Finding Aid” evoke the image of a compass for locating documents, whilst “indice di ricerca” can help to convey the idea of a research path within the archive.
