Studium der Kunstgeschichte, Germanistik, Philosophie und Italianistik an der Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in München, dort 1987 Promotion. Habilitation 1997 an der Technischen Universität Berlin. 1999 bis 2002 Lehrstuhl für Kunstgeschichte an der Ernst-Moritz-Arndt-Universität Greifswald. 2002 bis 2003 Ordinarius an der Universität Basel. Seit Oktober 2003 Lehrstuhl für Kunstgeschichte an der Freien Universität Berlin. Fellowships und Gastprofessuren unter anderem 1999 an der École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales, Paris, 2004/05 an der Italian Academy for Advanced Studies in America der Columbia University, New York, 2007/2008 am Exzellenzcluster "Kulturelle Grundlagen von Integration" der Universität Konstanz und 2011 am Internationalen Forschungszentrum Kulturwissenschaften (IFK), Wien. Zahlreiche Publikationen und Forschungsprojekte zur Theorie und Geschichte des Bildes, zur italienischen Kunst vom Mittelalter bis zum Barock, ferner zur Gegenwartskunst, zu Kunst und Film und zur Methodengeschichte.
