Seminar

Ayacucho Seminar.
Max Planck Partner Group “Empires, Environments, Objects”

From June 20 to 28, forty-one participants from Peru, Latin America, Europe, and the United States will gather in Ayacucho (Huamanga) for the fourth seminar organized by the Max Planck Partner Group “Empires, Environments, Objects,” in collaboration with the Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florenz (KHI), the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú (PUCP), and SUNY Stony Brook University. Conceived as a collaborative field seminar, the program brings together students from PUCP’s MA in Art History and Curatorial Studies, graduate and undergraduate students from Stony Brook University, and a group of senior scholars specializing in Hispanic art history and colonial visual culture. The seminar will examine the art and visual culture of the Huamanga region from antiquity through the colonial and postcolonial periods, exploring both continuities and conflicts in a territory of central importance to ancient Andean civilizations and to Peru’s independence process. In addition to support from the participating institutions, the event is funded by the Stony Brook Trustees Faculty Award, the Max Planck Society’s Kick-Off Workshop Program, the Adrián Pérez Melgosa Fund for Excellence, and the Department Wolf.
