Conference
Modernism & Organicism II.
Dialogues between Art, Philosophy and Science
International conference organized by Hannah Baader, Carlotta Castellani, and Venanzio Raspa
© Designed by Francesco Muzzi.
Following the conference "Modernismo e Organicismo I" held at the University of Urbino in 2023, the Florentine edition "Modernismo e Organicismo II" aims to continue the interdisciplinary exchange and reflection between art historians, philosophers, and historians of science that was initiated during the first edition on some of the key figures of organicist theories in the early 20th century.
Through two different panels, there will be a discussion on the figures of Henri Bergson (Caterina Zanfi, Michael Zimmermann) and Jakob von Uexküll (Oliver Botar, Carlo Brentari), as well as their impact on 20th-century visual art, with the goal of questioning new methodologies to be adopted for reading modernism.
The conference will be enriched by two keynote speakers, Peter Galison and Charissa Terranova.
The conference is part of the initiatives of the Department of Humanities of the University of Urbino (DISTUM) - Department of Excellence 2023 - 2027 – in collaboration with the research program 4A_Lab based in Berlin, a cooperation between the Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florenz – Max-Planck-Institut and the Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz.
