Workshop
Between fantasy and industrialization:
The architects Hedwig Feldmann and Hans Adler from Weimar Germany to USSR
Workshop promoted by the Biblioteca Nazionale Braidense, the Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florenz – Max-Planck-Institut and the Università degli studi di Firenze
This workshop aims at studying a recent donation to the Biblioteca Nazionale Braidense in Milan: the unpublished correspondence of architects Hedwig Feldmann and Hans Edward Adler, dating back to their stay in the USSR (1930-1933), and their collection of 257 Soviet children's books, most of which were published between the 1920s and 1933.
Hedwig Feldmann was one of the women, together with Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky, to be part of architect Ernst May's 'brigade' in the Soviet Union. The architect Hans Edward Adler worked for May in the USSR and married Hedwig. From 1932 the couple worked in Soviet Asia, in Tajikistan, independently from May. The workshop explores the personalities of the Adlers, the context in which they worked and their collection of children's books, many of which deal with the transformations of industrialization, a process to which May's brigade contributed.
