Renovation of the KHI's twin Palazzo Incontri-Rosselli site
Since the autumn of 2008 the KHI has been carrying out the last phase of a comprehensive refurbishment of its whole building stock according to the most advanced standards of restoration and conservation. This work will probably be completed in 2013.

As part of current building measures, the structure of the twin Palazzo Incontri-Rosselli on the Via Giuseppe Giusti, including its technical installations and fire-protection facilities, will be renovated and damage to its historic fabric repaired.

The aim of these measures is, in particular, to secure and preserve the Library's valuable holdings comprising over 310,000 volumes and significantly to enhance the quality of conditions of work and research in the Institute.

To ensure that the Library's holdings continue to be wholly accessible to readers on an open-shelf system even during the renovation work, the necessary building and reorganization measures will be conducted in several stages, during which sections of the holdings will be temporarily transferred to enable individual parts of the building to be renovated in succession.

Work began in August 2008 with building measures for the newly equipped rare-books section. A fully climatized and darkened environment for the state-of-the-art conservation of antiquarian and rare books was created. During transfer from the storeroom the stock was cleaned and newly installed in conditions responding to the most advanced conservational standards. The rare book section of the Library has once again been made available for scientific consultation since the summer of 2009.

After the removal of the KHI's Photo Library to the nearby Palazzo Grifoni Budini Gattai in the Via dei Servi in January 2010, the rooms on the top floor of the Palazzo Incontri-Rosselli will be temporarily closed for general renovation. They will then be used for the temporary shelving of books and the provision of added reading places.

The former lecture room was closed for further events in mid-February 2010 and will now be used to relocate individual sections of the library during the work of renovation.

Within the Institute itself the library staff at the information desk on the first floor will be glad to help you personally with any queries, Mondays to Fridays from 10:30 to 12:30 and 14:00 to 16:00.

We will make every effort to inform you in good time about any alterations in the transfer of library holdings. It is possible, however, that during such transfers individual groups of holdings may in the very short term remain inaccessible from one day to the next. We ask for your patience and understanding for any inconveniences connected with the renovation work.
