"Aus aller Herren Länder" - Biographies in Joachim von Sandrart's 'Teutsche Academie'
International conference at the Goethe-Universität Frankfurt am Main
co-organized by the Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florenz - Max-Planck-Institute (Alessandro Nova) and the Institute for Art History of the Goethe-Universität in Frankfurt am Main (Thomas Kirchner) by Susanne Meurer, Anna Schreurs and Lucia Simonato (Scuola Normale Superiore Pisa) Ever since the 1994 publication of a facsimile edition of Joachim von Sandrart's 'Teutsche Academie' (1675-80), which greatly facilitated access to Sandrart's complete text and illustrations also beyond German library collections, there has been a marked increase in studies of this major work of seventeenth-century art literature throughout Europe. Research has focused on textual and visual sources, Sandrart's editorial strategies, his collaborations with fellow artists, writers and scholars, as well as the book's reception in Germany and - in its Latin translation of 1683 - in Italy and France. Results of these intensive studies carried out over the past fifteen years have been incorporated in a new online edition (http://ta.sandrart.net) with critical commentary and in-depth indexes. It is hoped that this research platform will open up further avenues of enquiry for the field. The aim of this conference is to provide a survey of Sandrart's lives of the artists. Its concept is to bring together protagonists of recent Sandrart scholarship with experts on artists whose 'vite' Sandrart included in his 'Teutsche Academie'. Speakers will be the latter, who are kindly asked to re-examine the biography of their respective subjects, contextualising the artist within a broader theme of their choice. The Sandrart specialists (including staff and network partners of the Sandrart.net project) are invited to participate in the discussion following each paper. From the diverging perspectives of authorities on individual artists and experts on Sandrart's work we hope to reach new insights into both aspects - the artists themselves and the significance of the 'Teutsche Academie' as a primary source. Biographies have been chosen on the grounds of their particular relevance and the level of attention thus far levelled at them. Some lesser known names have been favoured over many of the lives of Sandrart's Roman contemporaries to which a number of comprehensive studies have already been devoted. The program follows Sandrart's own structure with respect to chronology and geography. The opening section is dedicated to artists from classical antiquity, whose biographies will afford an opportunity for discussion of the considerable antiquarian elements of the 'Teutsche Academie'. The second day of the conference will cover Italian artists and the Spaniard Murillo. Its twin aims are a renewed reflection on Sandrart's relationship with Vasari's 'Vite' and their legacy, as well as a re-examination of Sandrart's Italian sojourn and its literary review in the 'Teutsche Academie'. The third and final day focuses on the 'Oltremontani', a diverse group of German, Dutch, Flemish and French painters, sculptors and architects of the sixteenth- and seventeenth centuries, for whose biographies Sandrart employed a wide range of printed and manuscript sources, oral traditions and personal observation. It is hoped that this conference in Sandrart's hometown of Frankfurt will shed new light on historiographical, stylistic, theoretical and technical aspects of the book and thereby illustrate its multi-faceted nature. This complexity is reflected both in Sandrart's efforts to constantly update his text through the inclusion of new information up until the Latin edition (and biographies that first appeared in the 1683 text are placed at the end of each conference day), as well as in his extraordinarily geographic range. For, with his account of Chinese arts and the mysterious "Indian" painter Higiemonte, Sandrart extended his view far beyond Europe, to every corner of the world.
