Workshop

Dialogue

International Workshop organized by:
CIHA (Comité International d’Histoire de l’Art)
Università degli Studi di Bologna, Scuola di Specializzazione in Beni storico-artistici
Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florenz– Max-Planck-Institut

The CIHA Directory Board, in collaboration with Università degli Studi di Bologna, Scuola di Specializzazione in Beni storico-artistici and Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florenz – Max-Planck-Institut, organizes an international workshop for CIHA members, which will take place in Bologna, Italy, on January 8 and 9, 2024. The topic of the workshop is summarized in the polysemantic term Dialogue. In line with the general objectives of CIHA, the workshop intends to deepen the connections between various country-members by offering an opportunity to come together in-person to talk about the future of CIHA. The aim is to learn about the specific modes of practicing art history in countries represented by CIHA, to think about similarities and differences, and the best ways to use CIHA as a platform to create an international community that can support the development of art history both locally and on a global scale. We know that all our members are deeply committed to the field or, rather, active in the profound transformation of the art historical discipline that has been underway for some time, in the horizon of globalized societies. We have witnessed the great challenges for the discipline resulting from the pandemic as well as the aggravating political and ecological crisis of the present days. The workshop in Bologna will be an opportunity to discuss these recent dynamics and think jointly about the role of CIHA in the new post-pandemic realities as well as in the face of emergencies such as war and environmental catastrophes.

Format

All country-member representatives are invited to participate in the workshop. The representatives will have time to present a broad picture of the discipline of Art History in their own country and to make suggestions about how CIHA could support the further development of Art History, locally and globally. These presentations will be followed by conversations in group. The workshop activities will be distributed over two days (January 8 and 9). In the first day a CIHA General Assembly will also be held.

This workshop format is new and, if successful, could be repeated periodically as a way to strengthen the connections and expand conversations among CIHA members.
